Who it fits
Remote employees of companies based outside Spain, and freelancers whose clients are mostly abroad.
What usually matters
- Income of around twice Spain's minimum wage — in 2026 roughly €2,800 a month for a single applicant, more for each family member.
- Employer or client relationship of at least three months, with a company that has been active for at least one year.
- A university degree or at least three years of professional experience in the field.
- Clean criminal record, private health insurance and social security coverage.
- Can be requested at a consulate or from inside Spain during a legal stay.
Spain’s digital nomad visa, introduced by the Startups Law, lets non-EU professionals live in Spain while they keep working for companies or clients abroad. Freelancers may take on some Spanish clients, but the main activity must remain international.
The application can be filed at a Spanish consulate in your country of residence or, if you are already in Spain on a legal stay, directly with the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit. Filed in Spain, the permit is usually issued for three years and can then be renewed.
What decides the file
In our experience the economic proof is where most files are won or lost: payslips or invoices, bank transfers into your personal account, the employment contract or client agreements, and a company registry extract. Everything issued outside Spain must be apostilled and translated by a sworn translator — this takes time, so plan for it early.
Spouses, partners and children can be included in the same application; each family member raises the income you need to show.
