Who it fits
Retirees, investors and anyone who can support themselves in Spain without working.
What usually matters
- Enough passive income or savings for the first year — roughly €2,400 a month for the main applicant, plus about €600 a month for each family member.
- No work or professional activity in Spain while on this permit.
- Private health insurance with full coverage and no co-payments.
- Medical certificate and clean criminal record.
- Filed at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence.
The non-lucrative residence permit is designed for people who can live in Spain without working. The key requirement is showing that you have sufficient means — regular passive income such as a pension, rent or dividends, or savings that cover the full year.
The application is filed at the Spanish consulate that covers your place of residence. The first permit is issued for one year and is then renewed for two-year periods, as long as the financial conditions continue to be met.
What decides the file
Consulates look closely at where the money comes from and whether it is stable. Bank statements, pension certificates, rental contracts and dividend records need to tell a consistent story. Health insurance must be a full Spanish policy without co-payments.
This permit does not allow work in Spain. If you plan to keep a remote job, the digital nomad visa is usually the better route.
This page gives general orientation. The right route and the exact requirements are confirmed only after reviewing your file.
