Who it fits
Entrepreneurs and independent professionals who want to work for clients in Spain.
What usually matters
- A business plan and a favourable viability report from an accredited professional body.
- Enough investment and funds to launch the activity and support yourself.
- Qualifications, licences or experience matching the activity.
- Strong evidence of real demand — letters of intent or contracts from Spanish clients carry the most weight.
- Post-study holders can switch to this route from inside Spain within set deadlines.
The self-employed residence permit allows non-EU citizens to live in Spain while running their own business or freelance activity. It is granted on the basis of a business project that the authorities consider viable.
What decides the file
In our files, the immigration office has weighed concrete evidence over projections: signed contracts or letters of intent from Spanish companies, funds in the bank, authorisation to use an office, equipment and invoices, and a professional website with clear prices. Applications with a strong plan but few real clients have been refused on the grounds that returns were “not promising enough”.
Choose the declared activity carefully: in the first year it generally cannot be changed.
If you have been refused, there is usually a one-month window for an administrative appeal — keep proof of every filing.
This page gives general orientation. The right route and the exact requirements are confirmed only after reviewing your file.
